Soniture is an acoustic exploration on the concept of silence and meditation in an increasingly loud and fragmented world. The installation is composed of three freeform circuit sculptures wherein custom electronics are mounted inside a copper wireframe conch shell. From a distance, the sculpture emits a quiet hum—–an almost inaudible sound. Instead of a speaker, each circuit uses a bone-conduction transducer to translate sound waves into vibrations which, in turn, makes the sound only audible when placed against one’s skull. The piece invites us to feel [the sound] instead of listening to the sound. Each piece repetitively plays the physical resonance of an underwater activity that was recorded by the artist using a field recorder and a DIY hydrophone.
