Homo Novus explores the idea of a perfect society composed of prosocial individuals. The work is an interactive piece that simulates an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) scan showing the neural correlates of empathy, compassion, and altruism. The work is composed of several layers of etched acrylic sheets that are lit by a programmed LED matrix. The intensity of each behavior can be adjusted to one’s preference through the use of the slide potentiometers in the control box.
